Taxi, airport bus or a private driver waiting at arrivals: how to get from Marrakech Menara (RAK) to your riad in the medina, Gueliz or the Palmeraie.
How far is Marrakech airport from the medina?
Marrakech Menara airport (RAK) is only a few kilometres from the old city. By car, the ride to Jemaa el-Fna and the medina takes about 15 to 20 minutes, to Gueliz and Hivernage about 10 to 20 minutes, and to the Palmeraie about 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. The short distance is good news; the questions are how you get there, with what luggage, and where you are dropped off.
Option 1: taxi at the airport
Taxis wait outside arrivals. They are quick to find, but the fare is often agreed before you get in rather than read on a meter, and a standard petit taxi takes three passengers at most. For a family of four or more, or for a group with several large suitcases, you will need two cars or a larger vehicle.
Option 2: the airport bus
A city bus line links the airport with Jemaa el-Fna and Gueliz. It is the cheapest option and works well for a solo traveller with light bags. It follows a fixed timetable, stops on the way and does not take you to your door, so it is less practical late at night or with children.
Option 3: a private driver booked in advance
With a private transfer, your driver waits at arrivals, loads the bags and drives straight to your address. You know who is coming before you fly, you share your flight number so the driver can follow delays, and the van is sized for your group. On Kalonca you compare Marrakech airport private transfers from verified drivers and book online.
Getting to a riad inside the medina
Cars cannot drive into the narrow lanes of the medina. Your driver stops at the closest point vehicles can reach, often a gate or a small square, a few minutes on foot from your riad. Ask your riad in advance: many send someone to meet you with a luggage cart. Share the exact riad name and address with your driver so the drop-off point is clear.
Palmeraie, Agafay and beyond
Hotels and villas in the Palmeraie and desert camps in Agafay (about 45 minutes to an hour away) are harder to reach by taxi or bus. A pre-booked driver takes you straight there. Many travellers also go directly from the airport to Essaouira or the Atlas without stopping in the city.
Which option should you choose?
- Solo, light luggage, daytime: the airport bus or a taxi.
- Couple or family, late arrival: a private driver waiting at arrivals.
- Group of five or more, or lots of luggage: a private van, so everyone travels together.
- Palmeraie, Agafay or another city: a private transfer booked before you land.
