Fly into Marrakech, stay on the coast

Marrakech Menara (RAK) often has more flights and better fares than the coastal airports, so many travellers land there and head straight for the Atlantic. The question is how to cover the last few hours with luggage, after a flight, without going through the city first.

Marrakech airport to Essaouira (about 2.5 to 3.5 hours)

The road crosses the plains west of Marrakech, past argan trees and cooperatives, to the coast. Coaches run between the two cities from bus stations, so you would first need to get from the airport to the station. Marrakech airport to Agadir and Taghazout (about 3 hours)

Bus or private driver?

• Coach: cheaper, but you first go from the airport to a bus station, then follow a fixed timetable and arrive at another station.
• Private driver: meets you at arrivals, follows your flight, drives straight to your hotel or riad and stops when you want.

• Book the trip from the airport as one route and add your flight number.
• Late arrival? Ask the driver whether to drive the same night or stay one night in Marrakech.
• Give the exact address on the coast, especially for villas and surf camps outside town.
